Donald drapkin biography

Donald Drapkin, the prominent financier who died of a ski injury Monday in Colorado, was well known for his philanthropy in North Jersey.

Among the institutions the part-time Englewood resident and former Alpine resident supported were the independent Dwight-Englewood School, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly and the Cresskill Volunteer Fire Department.

Drapkin, 67, the founder and chairman of the activist hedge fund Casablanca Capital LP and a resident of Aspen, Colo., was skiing on Aspen’s Snowmass Mountain on Feb. 15 when he fell and hit his head, according to the Aspen Times.

He became dizzy and nauseous, the newspaper reported, and was airlifted to a Denver hospital, where he had surgery to relieve pressure on the brain.

He died at the hospital Monday afternoon, said Sara Fitzmaurice, a family spokeswoman.
