Shulamith Bath Shmuel Ben Ari Feuerstein was born in Ottawa, Canada as the second of six children in an Orthodox Jewish family.
Her mother, Kate Weiss, was a German Jew who fled from the Holocaust, while her father, Sol Feuerstein, was a Brooklyn-born merchant who fought in World War II. Her family Americanized their surname during her childhood and relocated to St.
Louis.
